Chrono, this may have come a bit too late... if only I've checked this thread earlier...(sign) anyway Internet Explorer do have some accessibility options to make writings easier for you to read on webpages...
First, tell you bro to go to menu 'view' select 'text size' and choose 'largest'.
then you need to go to 'Tools' then 'Internet Options', on the 'General tab', there is a button 'Accessibilities'. click on it, and check the three tickboxes 'ignore...' in 'Formatting'.
This should increase the font size to about 20....
don't know if this could make it a bit easier for you .....

P.S. for msn messenger you can do the same thing too....
